Heather MacAskill...Mixed Media Artist and Printmaker
Hello...I am an amateur artist who lives on the Isle of Skye with a love and appreciation for the outdoors. As always, my creative journey starts in nature — very much a sensory process, each piece begins with a meditative meander, collecting information and found objects. I walk familiar paths, wander through forests, hills and open landscape, tracing shoreline curves. I pause to notice and record using photography, notes and sketches. Each outing reveals something new — the shifting light on water, reflections, the changing moods of light on land, patterns left by wind or tide, a wealth of textures natural and manmade.
Back in the studio, I recall and study these moments and transform them into intaglio print plates, printed papers for collage, and printed textiles. The resulting artwork capture the essence of a place and time — telling the story of the landscape from the vast expanse of the sky to intricate details of the ground.
Formalities...
My formal art training took place in Edinburgh, where I first discovered—and fell in love with—printmaking. I began at Edinburgh’s Telford College before continuing at Edinburgh College of Art where I graduated in 1999.
It all started with a textile course, where I explored transfer printing onto cloth, later experimenting with photographs and cyanotype to produce images on fabric. Over the following years, I developed my printmaking practice on both paper and fabric, working with techniques such as monoprint, silkscreen, photogravure, and collagraph.
Photography also plays a central role in my work. Rooted in a visual media background I use it throughout my practice, from sketchbook explorations to final imagery.
I do hope you like what I create. Thankyou for taking the time to look. Please contact me if you are interested in any of my work...
